Model 2: Bio-Manufacturing Certificate Program

Since 2002, Skyline College has been an integral partner of the Biotech Workforce Network. One of their greatest contributions was assisting the San Mateo County Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and Genentech to develop and deliver an intensive bio-manufacturing certificate program for workers from a variety of industries. The program has earned a 97 percent program completion rate and an 88 percent placement rate. Program features include:
- Industry identification of target positions in production, documentation, and quality assurance;
- Targeted recruitment and assessment to industry standards;
- Industry Driven education including 204 hours (9 units of college credit) originally developed by Genentech and Skyline College and delivered by Skyline in an intensive 3 month program;
- Subsidized 12 week on-the-job training supported jointly by Genentech and San Mateo WIB.
As a model of regional collaboration with industry, this program has earned awards and recognition for effectiveness and innovation. It demonstrates the agility of the community colleges to bridge the diverse organizational cultures represented by government, business, and education to ensure California's economic vitality.
