Model 3: Example: Gateway to College and Careers
The Gateway Program is a learning community of instruction and support that prepares students for success in college and careers. Designed to bridge gaps in college readiness, students develop their abilities in English, math, and career planning. Gateway students create plans for successful transition to the next college and career experience. The Gateway Model represents a powerful economic development strategy for the San Francisco Bay Area for two significant reasons:
1) it taps underserved communities by providing the essential tools to
transition into high wage, high demand career training opportunities, and
2)
develops an existing talent pool for meeting industry’s demand for a high
quality workforce by equipping workers with the necessary skills for employment
sucess.
Gateway provides up to 14 units of contextualized instruction in math, English, and career development, along with dedicated counseling and tutoring to its 112 program participants to date. The program boasts a 90 percent completion rate of training with 79 percent of those participates moving onward to advanced career training and entering the workforce at an average wage at placement of $16.89.
